2020-for record

When we are too close to an event- we are always under perceived notion of that event being either too trivial or too important. Hence the year2020- may get it's suitable place in our collective history after few years. The year was unsettling for sure. When i started- it was of very great hopes. Because I was prepared for lots and lots of travel. But after March- we were just in state of limbo. The great pandemic put everything to halt. But the year taught me to be more resilient for sure. Like every year- I made the best out of it.

I will record here my personal progress-
I could pay off my home loan debts much earlier than i anticipated. There is always a great sense of achievement when you pay off your major debts. Good thing is- I have experienced them quite a few of them. You feel very hopeful after every event- whether it was for education, home, some kind of improvement, car etc. I could contribute greatly in my social work- I could donate and take part in lot of society work.

ohh- I got elevated as senior IEEE member. One milestone which i was planning to followup and do since 2010.
This year- I got the opportunity to publish many articles (Thanks to my beloved organization!!) but best was one where they put my photo in cover page of a publication I grew up reading.
This was also the year- when i learnt how to come out of my usual comfort zone. I am always a customer's person. I need to meet, feel, shake hands, talk and talk and then do my sales. Things changed. Could take to the new norm and do end to end selling over virtual meetings. After many years started selling value added services and it was all dejavu.

This was also the year when i did 3 marquee trainings- cross functional and cross country and came out with flying colors.

Lot of books- which were half read became fully read. Still many remains...

Got lot of time to teach Birsa- so many stuff. Researched for him and was able to spend so much quality time with him and Amrita. Could find time to teach him some of my favorite topics in Maths.

All credits to him and Amrita for progressing so well in this year- academically and professionally.

Maybe the future will tell us- what was so important about this year. but we all will agree- it made us a believer. Believer that there is much more powerful force called almighty. Believer that love and goodness triumphs- each time and everytime.

The ethereal connections

Some connections whether short term, slightly longer or very big- leave an aftertaste.

Some very brief connections-- give you memories and turn you around which cannot be explained in proper way. Now you may want me to define the time limit of being brief? Is it like momentary- seconds, some hours of togetherness or some months. For some reasons- the encounters small or big happen to be remembered by me very well. I am an incredibly positive person- so the aftertaste as  talked in earlier lines are always something I savor. Let me try to capture some of these connections.

I was lucky to spend significant time in a wonderland called Kiriburu (see- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiriburu ). The town came with added benefit of schooling in Meghataburu and frequently going to Hill top. It was mini-India and one day for sure I will write a story book on all the people I met there. Some God send connections made there were with many helpers who used to work with us. Simple people from local tribes- who made a deep impact on my outlook to life. Kehtro, Jaypal , Yudhistir and bou-- used to be beacons for a small kid Badsha. The love was unconditional and they taught me stuff which people may not get in best of the elementary schools. Death of Kehtro was one of the earliest experience of death. I remember my ma crying for him, a helping hand but he was part of our family. Jaypal I will remember as one who will condone all my mischiefs. Some very serious ones. But for him- I was always right. Learnt why not to repeat mistakes. Not for punishment, but an ordinary person will get hurt. Then there was Pandey sir- librarian- who first infused me with love for reading. A life long habit.  Chotu- his son, my first best friend (thank God- I am still regularly in touch nearly 40 years of friendship!!). Babai, Biley-- the first fast friends- with whom I used to gang up. The self appointed 'Gundas' of class. The connections were of very brief period but has left a mark on my consciousness.

Moving on from a small town to a relatively bigger city of Durgapur- brought more connections. that uncle who taught me swimming. I really feel- we had such simple times. some how the garbagebin comics capture those times. The friendships made these times still last. In school, in hostels...Niraj is always the brother I never had. The friend who was actually first 24 by 7 friend. In retrospect- we studied together for only 3 and half years but our friendship transcended all the distance and timelines. I think- we still have some kind of telepathy among ourselves. We can meet and start talking from where we left off- as if it was just minutes ago. Blessed to still be able to talk with him regularly. The hostel life, the time away from home brought many more connections- all very valuable. The associations were of hardly 2 years long or 4 years long but they are still very important for me.

Momentary meetings, chance meetings- some great ones.
During those early career days as travelling salesperson- when I was fortunate to experience my real country- i.e.. Bharat. I used to frequently use Maharashtra express. Gondia to all the way to Miraj & Kolhapur. The travels were mostly in unreserved compartments- Either Pune to south or Pune to East Maharashtra (To-Fro). I know how easy it is to make friends with a simple farmer of Maharashtra or a proud Maratha. It is very easy to fall asleep on each others shoulders while sitting on floor of train- after sharing of Junka bhakar dinner. Discussing in broken Marathi or Tatsam Hindi- the origin of Sai or the deeper meaning of religious texts. There was this teacher of Kolhapur and he explained me how he teaches Physics. He first explained me Quantum physics.

So many of those rich experiences. Maybe- each of them deserve a separate entry by itself.

Where were you?

After 12 years- I sit down to write my memories of that Wednesday evening (maybe-- if you are interested read my entry on 2008/Nov 28)- when we started hearing about the attacks first. The scale was unfathomable and it took time to sink in. i think By Friday morning the enormity of the situation somehow sunk in. 26.11.2008 will hence remain etched in my mind forever.Somehow i remember the weekend more vividly- 28th & 29th- that Friday and Saturday- Kamath and Willis conducted DDI training for us. That year was very significant...it was nearly 1 year I was in role of TI product manager. Lot of hardwork, very busy days. Doing so many things. Which i felt important But was not sure of future at all. There was excitement, there was changes and there was anticipation. Was aware of added responsibility that future will bring. Then there was this calamity brought upon by enemies of our country hitting hard.

I remember that day- when I took Amrita for her checkup. 28th- I was thinking... I am bringing a new life to the world and the world looks so dark, so sad. And today the 11 year old guy- gave me 20 minutes lecture on why peace & love is always stronger than anything else. Times change but fundamentals donot change--- just need to keep faith.

Another incident is very clear in my subconscious mind- 9th September,2001. It was in a dingy internet cafe (those internet cafe- 35/rs per hr for internet of 240mbps... just for records) near Majestic bus station. I first saw the news....The daily reports became very brief that day. I think Mehta sir did not mind. next few weeks nobody worried whether i met my targets or not...It was that significant a day and event.

In this special year of 2020, when everything looks so bad, so hopeless. I donot fail to tell myself- if Good could triumph over that bad .. things will look up again. We just need to keep the head down and continue doing hard work.

Some thoughts in form of interview

Interview// advertorial- as in EFY/ electronics b2b & iotforprofit mag.

Avnet is generally known as a leading distributor of electronics components. But of late, we have been noticing its projection as a complete solutions provider. To understand the strategy better, Rahul Chopra spoke to Sambit Sengupta, who heads the Solutions Sales team for the entire Asia! Here’s what we discovered…

Q. Is there any difference between Avnet in India and its global counterparts?

A. We are a global company with a global approach to solving customers’ problems. At the same time, we are local as well when it comes to interacting with customers, understanding their local challenges, and developing trusting relationships locally.

Q. Till what level is Avnet providing a solution? At some stage won’t you end up competing with your customers itself who are also providing those access-level solutions? Or is Avnet now providing end-level customer solutions and products?

A. We are very partner-centric. We believe that the entire solution game cannot be played by a single company. We (Avnet) are like providers of Lego bricks to our customers and have all the templates on how customers can assemble those Lego bricks. At times, we can also help in assembling some portions of it. But, it is never our intention to compete with our customers and partners.

When it comes to digital transformation (aka IoT), our solutions range from edge devices to cloud to dashboard integrated with AI consultancy and services. Those are our Lego bricks. It’s not only semiconductor but sourcing the semiconductors and taking data from the sensors. Many customers ask us to provide a gateway. So we make our gateways and give options for more suppliers and implement it into a platform.

We also provide a complete PaaS such as IoTConnect and SaaS platforms for data integration and analytics. These are built on Microsoft Azure. These platforms have all the basic ingredients for different use cases. Our customers or partners can simply customise them for their specific needs.

Q. Large customers typically like to have a solution provider implement the solution. So, then the system integrator becomes your customer and the end customer becomes their customer? Or do you bring in your partners who will deploy the final solution?

A. It’s a mix of both. We like to work with system integrators and a lot of our go-to-market strategy is with system integrators. Very large customers and OEMs either work with SIs or with ISVs. We are happy in providing solutions to the SIs. They add their competence to it.

Let’s say I am giving them an AI-based SaaS solution. Then they can modify it according to their end-customer’s requirement. Sometimes we collaborate with such partners and reach the same end-customer. It is very transparent to the end-customer as to who is doing what.

Q. Does it also mean that there could be a case where the customer and Avnet are working together such that Avnet is working as the system integrator for that customer and deploys the whole solution with the customer’s IT or technical team?

A. Not exactly. We are not in the SI space, at least not in India or Asia. Globally we do have a company owned by Avnet known as Avnet Integrated. Through them, we are capable of providing system integration services. But we leave it to the customer whether they want that service or not. Most customers in India have their own fixed SIs or fixed ISVs and we are happy to support that.

Q. So how do you avoid a conflict of interest between Avnet and other organisations that provide complete solutions like fleet management or asset tracking?

A. There’s no conflict. They are our customers. Many of them (like the example named) continue to purchase their GSM modules, MCUs and complete semiconductor stack from us. If they want to take this complete device to the SaaS solution for a wider market, then they can take help from Avnet. So we become their partner to collate this and make it a part of a bigger solution.

Q. Is there a formal procedure for like-minded organisations to partner with Avnet?

 A. Yes, there is one now. It was launched at CES in January this year! It’s called the IoT Partner Connect Program and is applicable globally. You will see the upcoming launch of our marketplace also.

Whether our partners are device manufacturers, SIs, solution providers or ODMs, they are all given access to something we call as Play Zone. So we invite them to our partner program where they can host their device or their solution on our partner connect program. They get to make their POC in our Play Zone, which is a sandbox kind of environment using our platform. And then Avnet works with the global end customer to promote their solution. So it’s a very partner-centric approach that we have taken in the connected world or the IoT sector.

Q. How are you viewing the growth of IoT?

A. The number of connected points has gone up tremendously. It is hard to say whether it meets what was predicted five years ago. It is not known as per data whether it is ten billion devices or twenty billion devices. But what is known is that there has been a huge percentage increase in the number of connected devices.

It is true that many of these remain at the POC stage and don’t move forward to the production level. However, it depends upon the end customers. If customers have a real problem, let’s say a pharmaceutical company wants to see how frequently their machines are getting knocked off or are getting under trouble, then they can deploy IoT solutions that provide predictive maintenance.

IoT is not only about getting revenue from the technology but is more to do with solving real business problems of a customer. If any solution solves a problem, then customers will go for that solution and invest in it.

Q. Many opine that deployments are not matching the hype around IoT. What’s your take on this subject?

A. For anything new, it’s human nature that there would be resistance and reluctance to change. As IoT offers a solution to the problem that we face, I am positive that IoT is here to stay. People facing problems regarding monitoring of their assets can benefit from track and trace solution. A few years back, we were not sure if people would go for rental bikes, but now many start-ups have come up and changed our perspective. And they used IoT devices to solve the challenge. So if there’s a problem that IoT can solve, customers will readily adopt.

Q. With this whole COVID-19 situation happening, how have you as the head of the solutions team, seen discussions change with your clients? Which ones have reduced and which ones are happening more?

A. Pre-COVID, we had a very vertical-oriented focus. Avnet was doing well in the industrial and automotive segments. These customers have been our partners for the last 5 years. Now, some of these end-customers are not doing that well and are not able to sustain their business. So we are supporting them in various ways.

For example, consider a customer who is good in production and has a business line where he has multiple plants. Today, he is more worried about restarting those plants. Therefore, his focus has shifted from buying components from Avnet to asking Avnet to help secure his people when they come in every day. That help can be in the form of contact tracing solutions to face-recognition attendance systems (instead of fingerprint-based attendance systems). So it’s becoming more solution-centric rather than just transactional sales where we act as a distributor.

Q. With all the contactless technology and a focus more on security and safety, are there any specific kind of applications that you are seeing having more demands and solutioning?

A. We call it as medical technology or remote-monitoring solutions. For example, a customer comes back saying that Avnet has a smart healthcare solution as a SaaS platform. He asks us to take all the data from different monitors placed in the ICU, set up an IoT box (gateway) and enable the doctors to have data in their hands remotely. This is an example of an end-to-end solution.

These kinds of solutions are becoming very popular worldwide. So, we are working with some independent design houses or ODMs, locally as well as outside India who are giving the device. We are then importing those devices to our gateway as well as directly using a simple mobile, which goes on our platform to give them a dashboard of real analytics.

Q. So, the pandemic is driving demand for new kind of solutions?

A. Yes, we are seeing pharmacy-based solutions where there is a demand for live inventory status as fewer people are managing those pharmacies. You want inventory on-the-go and just-in-time inventory control at critical care centres.

The demand for connected bands for track and trace applications has gone up. There was a lot of demand for thermal cameras that connected to the cloud. Avnet with sister company element14 brought these cameras and platform solutions to many of our customers.

Q. You mentioned the IoT analytics suite, a PaaS as well as a SaaS server on Azure. What all different components/Lego bricks are there in your portfolio?

A. On the device side, all the sensor manufacturers are our partners. Some customers are capable enough to take this off-the-shelf from us and make their super-sensor. Or sometimes they look forward to us to build the super-sensor (complete sensor module). For example, it’s an AI-on-Edge kind of device where we will be putting multiple sensors on a single board – thermal, temperature, humidity, accelero, gyro and different types of sensors. And then we provide connectivity. It can be through a BLE module and then we give it to the gateway where the sensor nodes talk with the gateway. So, these are the two aspects when we move from the device to the gateway.

Now moving on to the platform, Avnet felt that there was a gap between the IoT suites provided by the cloud-biggies such as Azure, AWS, Alibaba or Google and the kind of analytical dashboards needed by customers. So we brought in ready to plug-and-play analytical platforms such as SaaS tools. These SaaS functions are in our platform.

Suppose someone wants smart facility management in a hospital or a factory. The CEO or the CXO or the chief digital officer wants to monitor how the employees are coming in and what’s their temperature parameter. So, right from the sensor to the smart facility management – all are a part of the SaaS solution. This SaaS solution-set is never-ending. It is based on the customer.

For example, track-and-trace is a big application that we see, for logistics companies. Traditionally, logistics companies were not our customers but now they are because they want to improve the management of their drivers and fleet. They want to get all types of analytics such as how much time they have spent in a large factory and how their health parameter is – all in a nice analytic way of seeing it in a dashboard.

Q. What’s the pricing model for your SaaS solutions?

A. We have both pay per license and pay per use. But the majority of our customers like to opt for pay per use.

Q. Do you provide the entire solution on a SaaS model i.e. the customer pays a monthly rent/fee for the entire solution (opex) and never invests in the assets (capex)?

A. We are flexible in the pricing model for our customers, as we are keen to solve business problems. However, most customers prefer the opex model where they just pay a monthly subscription fee.

Q. Given that you have your gateways and also sell gateways of many brands, how do you handle the challenge of providing unbiased advice to customers?

A. It’s very specification oriented. There are various gateway manufacturers right now for different use-cases. So we go by end-use.

Q. Is the team developing the SaaS platform also working out of India and part of your team?

A. Avnet acquired a company two years back called Softweb Solutions. It’s headquartered in the US and has engineers in the US and Ahmedabad. They are mostly staffed with data scientists, AI scientists and people who have worked extensively on the Azure platform for the past 13-15 years. This is the capability that was acquired by Avnet, which is global and for every solution team across the world.

Q. A lot of discussions have happened around the edge where it has been said that AI and ML can no longer be sustained on the cloud and have to come to the edge. Since you mentioned about AI on edge boards that you have, how do you see that trend evolving?

A. Many things will remain on the cloud or move from on-premise to the cloud. But in use cases where decisions need to be made then and there, AI will move to the edge. This is a valuable trend that is prevalent everywhere. For example, in the case of predictive maintenance, there is no point in putting decisions or algorithms in the cloud.

Let’s say in a cloth mill, people want to know when and where the roller pin breaks down so that they can do maintenance. Or for that matter, imagine a customer who has multiple motors running at a time. In the pre-COVID era, that person used to employ four workers who checked the functioning of the motor. And if it worked erratically, then changed it based on experience.

Now that same experience can be learnt and translated into motion sensing with sensors. And these will be smart edge devices. Avnet has such devices called SmartEdge Agile devices that are being brought to the market. We are also customising it for our end customers.

Q. Is it like different devices created for different use cases or is there only a single device to which you insert different modules as per the application?

A. As of now, it’s a single board but we will be coming out with a different variety of this device in the future based on the feedback we receive from our customers.

Q. How has the response been for them in India?

A. It’s been good. We are seeing partners and customers who have already started using it in proof of concept rollouts.

Q. With respect to India, which are the areas where you expect demand to continue to grow despite the pandemic?

A. What we feel is that track and trace will remain. The logistics team will still require insight into end-to-end tracking and assets whether people are put up in-home or go back to the office. Asset monitoring in both industrial IoT and as well as in track and trace will be important.

Remote monitoring will see more people asking for the solution on remote monitoring, remote inventory management and facilities because when people start moving back to their offices, then they may need to monitor the facilities remotely. It will not be a person who will be moving around and checking everything. It will be much more contactless.

Q. Would it be correct to assume that the geography under you—the whole of Asia—could emerge as the leader across all geographies given the faster pace of digital transformation in this region?

B.C & the new normal- a short record

March was the last time- I could go out for customer visit. Never thought that we will see a day when the world just stops . ok- the activities still went on but lot changed. some for better, some for worse. Before the great Pandemic- the covid19 hit-it was a normal sales person's life. Every quarter full of excitement- numbers to close. that portion still remains, but the associated crazy travel is all stopped. It used to be 5AM get up. sometimes earlier-- if I have to take an early morning flight. If outside India- then it will be 'red' eye flights. But if you love travelling, you will always love historically 2nd oldest profession. If in 'station'- it was not devoid of travel- it will be zooming across the beautiful city of Bengaluru in car (if you can call average speed of 20 km/hr-- zooming.. so to say!!)- visiting customers, talking and talking. The talking part has not gone away. Then the routine of Birsa and Amrita- fully integrated with mine. They also will get up early- get prep and go for school by 7am. The normal routine, the same rigmarole.

What changed...Massive changes in outlook. Learning to count blessing- when you hear footsteps of death at every corner. The silent wailing of tired feet of countless migrants--- you do feel lucky. Then when you realize that the whole world is in great spin- then you stop taking yourself more seriously than required. So the new normal is being more emphatic, more tolerant and more helping towards- your fellow beings.

The new normal is still getting out of bed by 5 am... first hour getting myself oriented for the day, sometimes the calls will start early to accommodate ANZ & Japan region. The colleagues will gush- how early it may be in India. Some days these calls will go on till 11am. with in between- break to do some household chores. bringing milk, making tea for all. They can get up after 1 hour than me- but I am blessed to have equally regimented son- who loves to stick to his routine of Karate, making bed, then getting ready . He starts the day with AOPS maths, the khan academy and Piano. He sneaks in some amount of TV by the time his class starts. From 8- Amrita's calsses starts. and Birsa's by 1130. Then the fun starts. my calls comes down. whichever is there- it faces the internet bandwidth issue. sometimes it is funny situation. Bedroom taken over by Biology teacher and cells , molecules and Genetic studies goes down the throat of mesmerized students. The dining room is full of chattering pre-teen kids speaking all at same time online. the sales guy is relegated to non network area and based on mobile network and lots of hello, hellos in booming 200 Db voice the transactions are done. Hopefully both the customer and sales person -- shouting at each other over their laptops are not taken as signs of mental breakdowns. Neighbors do see such signs and i can distinctly hear their silent tsk-tsk.

In between somehow the teacher finishes the cooking and me the clean up of house.  The quick lunch for both of them. sometimes i have to take it after far East countries close the issues. Silent time for me is- 4 to 6 pm. when i can catch on normal admin stuff. Mid of the week- 730pm to 930pm- we will have corporate head qtrs calls. This is fairly new stuff for me- since last October after my new Asia leader role. Speaking times will be typical 15 minutes, but prior preparation will be more than 2 hours everytime. There is no complaints but just wonder what could have been so different. This was the year- I was expecting so much movement and whole world just stopped. All action moved online... that was a bummer. But again- would I have been able to teach so much to my son or spend so much time with him?Yes missing parents, missing meeting friends, missing some awesome time together possibilities. But maybe- it is new Normal. There will be change again. Better times ahead-- when we will move away from microsoft teams and more physical meet ups. more intimate times. But till then let this be recorded.

Never think you are alone

Amrita was singing this song in her sweet voice and the tune caught me offguard. This song became famous in 2016 from the movie- Praktun (Former). Story line of lost love and yearning.
But then the tunes have this habit of repeating themselves.
in your mind. Then it forced me to think on in a nostalgic manner. Wasn't there a time-I used to think everything lost. everything dark and everything so sad? Then the struggling years and repeated failures- which eventually became badge. The badges that you proudly display because you find that experience enriching and responsible for pushing you forward. There is ofcourse so much to do and look forward to. even when the world seems to have gone into tailspin of Pandemic and whatever we took for granted- seems so distant. Will that particular awesome day ever come back?
So, when i saw her singing and doing a dance.. the yearning came back.
Then i looked up this song in Youtube. One comment was- We all feel we are the only ones who have faced lonliness, loss and frustrating yearning forever. then you listen to such sweet songs and know you are not alone.
long live love.

Short notes on lockdown 1.0 to 4.0 and unlockdown 1.0

I never thought ever that we will have to record such days ever. Unimaginable.
When it was January and I went to HK and Singapore-- there was this talk of SARS like virus. I remeber being in one HK restaurant and people gearing up for Chinese new year but short discussions and nervous laugh on a new virus. The most worrying stuff was the China president was taking it seriously and talking about it.So general consensus was this is going to be serious. But everything ok in Jan in India.Februaray- mid--the infection was starting to spread- and some limited steps taken in India.March 3rd- I even took a flight to viayawada for a customer visit. after returning the scare was real. The first case near home was reported.
Then the lockdown of 21 days was announced. before that ofcourse me and Birsa participated in banging the thalis...
So many firsts--- Railways got closed, flights got closed. Our office which was operating at 50% ( 1 week from home next week from office- split in 2 teams)- went full fledged WFH ( work from home). We geared up.. Amrita's ICSE exam duty took a break...Birsa's final exams-- postponed and eventually he got promoted without exam.
We took so many actions....All three of us started a full fledged disciplined routine. Birsa's routine was full of maths from beast academy, karate, piano, doing the work of school.I personally quickly adapted to new type of doing business. Directing the Asia wide team from home.It became more taxing.. more intense. and maybe more studies.Every plan moved from being planned face to face to virtual. Teams meetings, Zooms meetings... not only me but Amrita became completely expert at.

Amritas classes started and then Birsas.. the problem was net bandwidth and we took measures to have multiple connections.
My office started operation again as 50% rule from June 1st--and all sacry way of operations started.

Yes the battle continues.. the infections are all rising and we are adopting all kind of measures.

But in midst of all- I found... we are stronger and closer. specially Birsa and myself discovered so many new things in computer coding, mathematics , history.
In short-- these days became a learning journey,, enriched life.

Bring up Baba by Birsa-5

This was funny to the core.
I am always curious to know what Birsa thinks.... sometimes the curiosity gets the better of me.
Baba:- So, today what are you feeling like ? what to achieve?
Birsa:- many things.. and i am not sure.
Baba- As we were thinking yesterday, what you want to do when you grow up?
Birsa:- Not sure. There is so much time.. and I want to do what i will like that time
Baba:- Great, but what you desire to be? If you study well and all resources at your disposal what will you like to do?
Birsa:- I will like to do something good... I will like to make a Car.
(pause.. long one.). one eco car.. may be electric.. but i read that disposing of batteries are bad.. so i will find out how to make a car which will be very very fast and eco friendly. I will design and make that.
Baba:- wow-- all by yourself?
Birsa:- Design and concept will be mine.I will like to take team help. i have a brand name ready.. it is varya... ( after lot of head scratching i found it is vajra.... same as mirage is known in iaf)

Baba- so what are your plans?
Birsa- i will either be part of a big brand or big team or I will make my own. Big brand Vajra cars. super fast.
Baba- ok, so by 2035-- can i get one vajra for myself.
Birsa-- complete silence.....

long pause... NO.

Baba- why? you won't gift me one after making.
Birsa--- no, you have to buy.. I will give discount. heavy discount. But you got to buy. otherwise you will not drive it properly.and not take care.

Travails of Travel- a salesman's hack

Salespeople come in different shape and size. Most of us- have humble origins and even though we charge forward and climb the different hierarchy- we remain at heart simple people with simple needs. There will be the flashy ones--- ahh the glamour oozes from them.
But today I will talk about the ones who are their in field and who bring the bacon home for their companies. at different stage of their career they will be the one- whom you may call as miser but they will actually be against any wasteful expenditure. Most salespeople I know, admire and respect have this trait- get things done , cut the unnecessary things out.
And they enjoy while doing it.
Some Sales people that I have come to admire for sheer power of closing and doing the heavy lifting without a sign of tremor- does it with right heart.
Personal comfort comes always last for us. for the outside world- the frequent flights, snazzy sounding hotels and 5star treatments- seems like perks. But for us- it is just reaching there on time with a clean shirt on our back and a uncreased pant with a shining shoe matters the most. Clinching the deal is important- the good food with client-- we donot focus. The negotiation outcome is important, the value we sold was what i remember after every deal- not the commission i made. Finally the star sellers-really require the good bed to sleep. So that next day- he can start fresh- a new day to win.A good and great sales person differentiates by being consistently humble and getting things done. The rest all traps- exotic locales for sales conference, flying miles, hotel points-- are just- peripherals.
A red eye flight, then pulling self to meet custoemrs- 2 at a time, then having awalk to keep self fit-- all in days work. on the way- study people, see the world- and appreciate how beautiful it is and what i did today to make it better tomorrow. That's all matters to the sales man.

Daringly towards 2020

This post is late... Really late..  the words were forming in mind sometime during the last two weeks of 2019. I had amazing time on the banks of Ganges , valuating what I did right and evaluating what needs to be done. 2019 was one of those amazing years.. full of positive things and a rare heartbreak. Anyways I don't care much about heartbreaks.when you have a rich experience in that field called rejection and failure. Once you start seeing good in every situation, inner peace is attained. The year helped me to sign off a professional role with aplomb and start a new one with trepidation but with gusto. 2020 ... I know will be a landmark year which will define my next 10 years... Something similar to 2010. These tectonic shifts that happens with me are always phased in a pair. 99-2000, 2009-10, 2019-20 will also follow the same trend of.positivity... I am sure. 89-90.. that pair of years... My first brush with learning leadership. However 99-2000 made me strong ..It was literally tampered with fire..And now it seems so far. You can laugh off.
2020 comes with promise of learning new stuff more... More interesting customers problems to solve. All the while doing what I like. Solving problems and selling solutions.  But maybe I will pray more often for peace and good for all. Maybe I will not.only wish but see more.love going around. Because if you wish love and peace it has magical.way of coming back to you.
